North Carolina Governor McCrory Signs SB 353

WASHINGTON – Late yesterday afternoon, Governor Pat McCrory signed into law SB 353, a pro-life omnibus bill including the top three legislative priorities for North Carolina Right to Life. Standing up to a vitriolic pro-abortion lobby, the governor courageously stood up for North Carolina mothers and their unborn children. The legislation passed the Senate 32-13 last Thursday.

SB 353 ensures that North Carolinians will not be forced to pay for abortions through insurance sold in the health insurance exchange that will established under the federal ObamaCare law, protects unborn children who would be killed through abortion due to their sex, and further protects mothers from dangerous web-cam abortions.

“Despite the majority of Americans, and North Carolinians, wanting these common-sense measures, the Governor has been treated to angry refrains from a vocal minority,” said Mary Spaulding Balch, J.D., director of state legislation for National Right to Life. “We are so pleased that he stood up for life and has enacted these vital life-saving measures.”

North Carolina is now the 23rd state to opt out of abortion coverage in the federal insurance exchange. Additionally, North Carolina is the 15th state to ban “web cam” abortions, and the 7th to protect unborn children from sex-selection abortion. Seventy-five percent of North Carolinians (Civitas Poll, 2013) and 85% of the general public (Polling Company, 2013) oppose sex-selection abortions, and past polling has found a large majority (generally 60% or more) who oppose the use of public tax dollars to pay for abortion.

“Today, North Carolina will be safer for unborn children than it was yesterday,” added Balch.“North Carolina is the latest state to enact protective and common-sense measures that echo the growing public discontent with current abortion law. Mothers and their unborn children deserve better than the violence of abortion, and the American people continue to support measures that encourage a culture of life.”
